Atletico DOMINATES Barcelona After Red Card Chaos in Champions League
Atletico Madrid take control against 10-man Barcelona in Champions League quarter-finals, grabbing a crucial first-leg lead at Camp Nou.

Atletico Madrid took a commanding lead in their Champions League quarter-final first leg at Camp Nou, capitalizing on Barcelona’s numerical disadvantage after Pau Cubarsi's dismissal.
The La Liga leaders were in control early, but everything changed when Cubarsi brought down Giuliano Simeone, who was clear on goal. Cubarsi initially received a yellow card, but following a VAR check, the referee sent him off.
From the resulting free-kick, ex-Manchester City forward Julian Alvarez curled the ball into the net, breaking the deadlock. Later, with 20 minutes left, Alexander Sorloth added a second, giving Diego Simeone’s side a strong position ahead of the second leg in Madrid.
Atletico, who have previously reached finals in 2014 and 2016 only to fall to Real Madrid, eye a spot in the semi-finals for the first time, while Barcelona face a tough uphill battle to defend their title, last won in 2015.
This match was the second of three clashes between the sides in two weeks, with Atletico knocking Barca out of the Copa del Rey semi-finals just last month.
Barcelona began with promise, largely through Manchester United loanee Marcus Rashford, who posed a consistent threat on the left wing. Meanwhile, Atletico packed their right flank to contain young star Lamine Yamal, which allowed Rashford some space.
The England international had the best early chances but was denied by Atletico keeper Juan Musso. Alvarez, linked recently with Barcelona, also tested Barca’s goalkeeper Joan Garcia during the contest.
Rashford volleyed narrowly wide and had a goal disallowed for offside involving Yamal in the build-up. Despite being pressed by multiple defenders, Yamal's skillful movement created opportunities, though Robin Le Normand blocked a key shot.
Barcelona’s fans were frustrated when Atletico’s veteran midfielder Koke escaped with a yellow card after fouling three different Barca players.
The game remained tight until Cubarsi's reckless foul changed its course. Barca continued battling with ten men after halftime, with coach Hansi Flick making tactical changes: Robert Lewandowski and the booked Pedri made way for energetic midfielders Gavi and Fermin Lopez.
Barcelona still created chances, with Rashford hitting the side netting after rounding Musso, and narrowly having a free-kick tipped over. But it was Atletico who struck again, when Griezmann and Matteo Ruggieri combined to set up Sorloth, who outmuscled Gerard Pique and scored.
Musso made later saves to keep Barca at bay, denying attempts from Joao Cancelo and Yamal. However, the Catalans couldn’t find a consolation goal, leaving the five-time Champions League winners trailing significantly with the second leg looming on Tuesday.
The tough result leaves Barcelona with a demanding task to overturn the deficit if they want to keep dreams of European glory alive.
