Diego Simeone argues with the referee on the touchline during an Atletico Madrid match

Atletico Madrid’s draw against Galatasaray in Istanbul leaves them eighth in their group, complicating their direct path to the last 16 of the Champions League.

Giuliano Simeone gave Atletico a dream start by scoring early from Matteo Ruggeri’s cross. However, Marcos Llorente’s unfortunate own goal balanced the score just 20 minutes in, preventing Jan Oblak from a clean sheet on his 100th Champions League appearance. Llorente later redeemed himself with a crucial interception that stopped Galatasaray from snatching a late win.

Galatasaray, energized by the home crowd, nearly took the lead before halftime when Baris Yilmaz missed a well-positioned shot, sending it over the bar.

On the hour mark, Atletico threatened again, but Abdulkerim Bardakci blocked David Hancko’s shot off the line. Diego Simeone shuffled his pack, bringing on Antoine Griezmann for Sorloth while keeping Julian Alvarez on despite his recent goal drought. Alvarez, who’s managed just one goal in his last 10 outings, showed more spark than in previous games.

Griezmann tested Galatasaray’s goalkeeper Ugurcan Cakir with a curling free-kick in the dying minutes, only to be denied. Cakir also stopped a follow-up attempt by Alex Baena, preserving the draw.

Galatasaray almost snatched victory in the final moments, but Llorente’s timely tackle stopped Eren Elmali’s strike.

The stalemate leaves Galatasaray needing a result against Manchester City next week to push for a play-off spot, while Atletico still have a chance to climb the standings when they host Bodo/Glimt.
