Arsenal’s 3-2 loss to Manchester United has reignited doubts over their ability to shake off the label of perennial runners-up and finally clinch a Premier League title after 22 years. Despite trailing, Mikel Arteta’s squad still holds a four-point advantage over the inconsistent Manchester City and surprising challengers Aston Villa with 15 matches remaining.

With Champions League last-16 qualification secured, Arsenal are also in strong positions in domestic cup competitions, including the League Cup and a home tie against third-tier Wigan in the FA Cup’s fourth round. However, former Arsenal captain Patrick Vieira raised concerns about the team's mental toughness following their cautious performance that ended their unbeaten home run this season.

There are still questions about the mental strength of the team.

Patrick Vieira

They need to understand when they are on the pitch they have to play with more energy and more risks. They have the quality.

Arsenal missed an opportunity to extend their lead as City and Villa faltered recently. After two consecutive goalless draws against Liverpool and Nottingham Forest, their defense was breached thrice at home for the first time in nearly three years, allowing United a rare victory at the Emirates since 2019.

We have to show the mental strength that we have on the pitch when it comes to matchday,

Mikel Arteta

We lost a game... It's how we react to that and I am very convinced because I know those players in that dressing room and how much we want it that we're going to react immediately.

Mikel Arteta

The team's creative struggles in the final third remain a challenge. No Arsenal player has netted more than five league goals this season, a stark contrast to Manchester City’s Erling Haaland, who has four times that tally.

More than half of Arsenal’s league goals have come from own goals or set-piece situations — including a Lisandro Martinez own goal and Mikel Merino’s corner finish. Meanwhile, new signing Viktor Gyokeres hasn’t ended the quest for a reliable striker, and Bukayo Saka has been goalless in 13 games.

Still, Arsenal hold a prime position to claim their first title since the undefeated 2003/04 season under Vieira’s leadership, helped by the inconsistency of their title rivals. City ended a five-game winless streak with a victory over Wolves, but face tough upcoming matches against Tottenham and Liverpool, venues where they rarely triumph even in their strong recent history. Aston Villa’s surge under Unai Emery continues to make their title challenge one of the Premier League’s biggest surprises since their last championship in 1980/81.

The journey's not always going to be smooth, there's going to be ups and downs,

Bukayo Saka

It's up to us to show our character next week.

Bukayo Saka

If Arsenal can steady the ship, they still hold the keys to a long-awaited league crown.
