Sources within Manchester United say Michael Carrick will have to achieve something truly outstanding to be considered for the club’s permanent manager job, ESPN reports.

Those close to the club stress that it’s highly unlikely United will follow the same path as with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who was appointed permanently after a spell as interim boss.

Despite Carrick’s impressive results since taking charge, the club is determined to conduct a careful and long-term search for a new manager rather than rushing into a decision.

That means the former midfielder has no "guarantee" he will be leading the Red Devils on a permanent basis, regardless of the recent positive run.

The focus remains on achieving stability and ensuring the next full-time coach fits with the club’s vision.
