Liverpool’s hopes of qualifying for the Champions League next season took a serious blow after a 1-2 loss to Wolverhampton on Tuesday.

BBC reports that missing out on Europe’s premier club competition could cost the Reds around £120 million. That figure represents the financial gap between playing in the Champions League and the Europa League.

Last season, Liverpool earned £85.3 million from UEFA prize money after reaching the Champions League round of 16. In contrast, their 2023/24 campaign saw them knocked out in the Europa League quarterfinals, bringing in just about £23.3 million.

The financial hit wouldn’t stop at prize money. Matchday income and commercial deals would also take a hit. Some of the club’s sponsorship contracts include bonuses tied to Champions League participation.

Still, Liverpool’s overall financial position remains solid. One season without Champions League football wouldn’t spell disaster for the club.
