Spain vs Argentina FINAL Showdown! Who Will CLAIM World Cup Glory in New Jersey?
Spain and Argentina face off tonight at MetLife Stadium for the 2023 World Cup title. Who will become champions? Don’t miss this epic battle!

Spain and Argentina will battle it out tonight to crown a new world football champion.
The final of the 23rd World Cup kicks off at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey at 22:00 Bulgarian time. The stakes are high – a place in history and eternal memory in football folklore.
Spain, who beat France 2-0 in the semifinals, has the chance to claim their second World Cup title after their triumph in 2010. A win would also complete a remarkable double, following their European Championship victory in 2024. The so-called "La Furia" previously achieved a similar feat between 2008 and 2012, winning two European titles and a World Cup in between.
For Argentina, this match carries even greater significance. The "Gauchos," who overcame England 2-1 in the semifinals, could become the fourth nation to win the World Cup at least four times after Brazil (5), Italy (4), and Germany (4). They also have the chance to successfully defend their 2022 title from Qatar, a feat only Italy in 1938 and Brazil in 1962 have managed.
Despite strong cultural, historical, and social ties – and both teams having rich footballing histories – Spain and Argentina have met only once before at a World Cup. That clash happened back in 1966 during the England World Cup group stage, where Argentina beat Spain 2-1 at Villa Park in Birmingham. Luis Artime was the hero for Argentina, scoring both goals. The match was officiated by Bulgarian referee Dimitar Rumenchev.
Although both teams reached the final largely through excellent teamwork, the outcome is expected to hinge on a showdown between their stars – 19-year-old Lamine Yamal and Lionel Messi. Messi, now 39, has known Yamal since he was a baby after they both took part in a photoshoot in 2007 organized by Catalan newspaper Sport and UNICEF. Messi was already a rising star at Barcelona, while Yamal was just five months old. Ironically, both have grown into some of the biggest stars not only at Barcelona but in world football.
Who will come out happier remains to be seen sometime after midnight. The World Cup 2026 final being held in the US means the halftime break will be longer than the usual 15 minutes. Similar to the Super Bowl, a musical show featuring Shakira will take place between halves. So the new world champion won't be known until Bulgaria has already entered Monday.
This World Cup has also been notable for several firsts:
- Hosted jointly by three countries: USA, Canada, and Mexico
- Featured a record 48 teams
- Completed 103 matches so far with fans eagerly awaiting the 104th, the final whistle
- The final will be officiated by a Slovenian referee team led by Slavko Vincic
Winners will receive not only the traditional trophy and gold medals but also championship rings, similar to those awarded in American sports.
Another interesting fact is that the 2030 World Cup is set to be organized in both Spain and Argentina. Spain, Portugal, and Morocco secured the right to host the 24th World Cup. To mark the 100th anniversary of the first World Cup in 1930, FIFA also decided that Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay would host matches. Uruguay hosted the inaugural tournament, beating Argentina 4-2 in the final held in Montevideo.
