Marc Syria, a candidate for Barcelona’s presidency, has reiterated his strong desire to bring Lionel Messi back to the club in some capacity. He says it’s crucial for tackling the team’s debts and securing its long-term stability.

The financier, who announced his bid for the 2026 elections, repeated his stance during an interview with SPORT. Syria called Messi a “strategic partner,” capable of boosting revenue and protecting Barcelona’s member-owned club model.

Leo Messi is a multinational company. This is a real project in which Messi is a strategic partner of the club.

Syria also pointed to a clear financial issue: Barcelona’s current revenue of €994 million is almost the same as it was in the 2017/18 season, then €990 million. Adjusted for inflation, the club should be pulling in at least €1.2 billion annually today.

Either we realize that Lionel Messi is strategically important not only for the present but also for the future of the club and for preserving the ownership model, or we simply don’t understand modern sport.

Marc Syria

I would be happy for Messi to say goodbye stadium by stadium as a Barca player, but if that’s not possible, then as an institutional and commercial figure who can bring the necessary resources.

Marc Syria

This is for later (laughs)… I’m sure Leo wants to return to Barcelona. And Barcelona needs Leo.
