Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Thomas Tuchel and Roberto De Zerbi were on Manchester United’s managerial shortlist as far back as the summer of 2024. At that time, Erik ten Hag’s position was under serious threat before winning the FA Cup bought him some breathing room.

The Italian journalist said INEOS and the club’s board met with both coaches during that period, but neither outright rejected the job. Instead, the feeling between the parties wasn’t quite right, as the project didn’t fully match what the managers were seeking.

In his latest update, Romano explained: "These two names are Thomas Tuchel and Roberto De Zerbi. They did not refuse Manchester United in the sense that they did not want to become managers of the club.

Rather the feeling was that at that moment the project was not exactly what they wanted." - Fabrizio Romano]

He added the situation might have changed now amid the ongoing search for a long-term successor to Rúben Amorim.

Both candidates remain tied up elsewhere – De Zerbi is enjoying strong results at Marseille, while Tuchel is fully focused on leading England to the World Cup.

It is still too early to say whether it will be them or another candidate.
