Liverpool’s Florian Wirtz Finds Top Form After Challenging Start to Season
Florian Wirtz explains why he chose Liverpool, details his tough start, and reveals he's now thriving in the Premier League. A must-see!

Florian Wirtz opened up about his summer move to Liverpool and adjusting to life in the Premier League.
The attacking midfielder explained why he chose the Reds amid plenty of speculation over his next destination.
I thought: this is the right place to become a better and more important player. This is such a big club, and the team won the Premier League last year. I had very good meetings with the coach before the transfer, and a few players also reached out to me. Virgil van Dijk and Mo Salah wrote to me. They were not asking me to come, they just wanted to show me what Liverpool is about. Virgil said he would be happy if I came, and maybe I can help the team become even better than last season. These are the words you want to hear and that eventually help you make a decision. I’m still happy I made this choice, even though the start was not easy.

Despite the excitement around his arrival, Wirtz admitted his early days on Merseyside weren’t straightforward.
I was very happy and excited and wanted to succeed immediately. But that didn’t happen. I just had to be strong mentally and keep believing in myself that at some point everything would work out. I kept telling myself: I played so well in Germany, there’s no way I just forgot how to play football here. Football wasn’t completely different. It wasn’t always easy to be confident on the pitch, but I think I coped well, and my close ones helped me.

When asked if anyone in particular supported him during that tough phase, Wirtz kept it low-key.
I’m not the type to talk a lot about these things. But my family and my friends believed in me.

Now settled, the 21-year-old says he’s found his rhythm and feels much better than earlier in the season.
Now I feel much better than at the start of the season. It’s nice to play alongside footballers like Hugo Ekitike.

Liverpool signed Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen in June 2025. The German winger has since made an impact with 5 goals and 5 assists across 31 games in all competitions, and he’s contracted with the Reds until 2030.
