Kylian Mbappe Scores Twice as Real Madrid Secures Key Victory at Villarreal
Kylian Mbappe scores twice to secure Real Madrid's vital victory away at Villarreal, boosting title hopes in La Liga race.

Real Madrid took a crucial step in their season's revival by beating Villarreal away, thanks to Kylian Mbappe’s two goals. The win pushes Alvaro Arbeloa’s side two points ahead of Barcelona, who face Real Oviedo on Sunday. Mbappe now has 21 La Liga goals this season, cementing his role as Madrid’s top marksman.
After a tough start under Arbeloa, including a stunning Copa del Rey exit to Albacete, Madrid appear to be gaining momentum with three straight wins across all competitions. The coach has leaned heavily on his star players, with Mbappe proving to be indispensable.
The game at Estadio de la Ceramica began with energy but lacked precision. Villarreal’s Georges Mikautadze almost broke the deadlock with a volley that went just wide, following a floated cross from veteran striker Gerard Moreno. Madrid responded through their midfielder Arda Guler, who had a shot saved by Villarreal keeper Luiz Junior and another effort that sailed over the bar.
A blow to Villarreal came when Juan Foyth was forced off injured. Still, the home side pushed hard before halftime, with Pape Gueye narrowly missing the target. Gueye, fresh off his Africa Cup of Nations triumph, showed determination but couldn’t convert.
Vinicius Junior, who starred in Madrid’s recent Champions League thrashing of Monaco, created several chances but remains stuck on a 13-match league goal drought. Yet his involvement was key as he set up the opener for Mbappe just two minutes after the break. Vinicius cut inside from the left wing and his low cross was partially blocked, but Mbappe was alert to tap in his 20th league goal.
Villarreal fought back hard in the second half and came close to equalizing when Moreno missed a golden opportunity by shooting over from a good position. However, the visitors sealed the win deep into stoppage time when Mbappe was fouled in the box by Alfonso Pedraza. The Frenchman calmly rolled the resulting penalty into the net, securing a 2-0 triumph for Madrid.
This win reinforces Madrid’s resurgence under Arbeloa and highlights Mbappe’s growing importance as the team chases silverware.
