The 29-year-old signed with San Jose until June 2028, becoming the second prominent German international to join an MLS club this year, following Thomas Mueller's transfer to Vancouver Whitecaps in August.

To have a player of Timo's calibre coming in is simply outstanding for the club and the community. I believe he'll offer us quality on the field, experience and leadership.

Werner’s breakthrough came during the 2019-20 Bundesliga season, netting 28 goals for Leipzig before moving to Chelsea. Despite winning the Champions League in 2021, his time at Stamford Bridge was tough, marked by criticism over inconsistency in front of goal.

Returning to Leipzig in 2022, Werner also spent a season and a half on loan at Tottenham but struggled to regain his earlier form. After rejoining Leipzig this season, he has made just three Bundesliga appearances.

The last few months have been challenging for me, but I've learned a lot and will take that with me for the future.

He plans to keep training in Leipzig until mid-February before relocating to the United States ahead of the MLS campaign.

Having scored 113 goals across 216 appearances, Werner leaves Leipzig as the club’s all-time top scorer.

On the international stage, Werner has earned 57 caps for Germany and scored 24 goals, though he hasn't been called up since June 2023.
