Atletico Madrid have been dealt a blow as Leon Goretzka opts to stay with Bayern Munich until his contract runs out in June, ending speculation surrounding a January switch.

The 30-year-old midfielder, once seen on the brink of joining the Spanish side, took to social media to thank interested clubs but made his intentions clear.

Dear fans, the last few days have been more hectic than expected, but I want to make this clear,

Leon Goretzka

While I feel honoured by the interest from the world's top clubs, I have personally decided that I want to stay at Bayern until the end of the season.

Leon Goretzka

Goretzka highlighted the positive environment at Bayern and the influence of their coach in reigniting the team's spirit.

I'm part of a team where it's incredibly enjoyable to be, both on and off the pitch, and I have a coach who has restored our former unity,

Leon Goretzka

He also set sights on winning major honors before his departure, which will come when his current deal expires.

Our common goal is to return to Marienplatz in May with our hands full and celebrate the biggest titles with all of you.

Leon Goretzka

The midfielder confirmed there will be no contract extension.

The club and I have decided, after calm and constructive discussions, that our successful time together will conclude this summer. As I've said before, this is my moment to prove myself as a footballer and as a person. But I still have much to achieve before then. Let's do everything together so that both at Bayern and with the national team, we achieve the greatest success this season and at the World Cup. I am looking forward to it and thank you for your support,

Leon Goretzka

Earlier reports noted Atletico's agreement with Bayern, offering a small transfer fee plus covering the €8.5 million gross salary Goretzka was owed this season. Despite this, the player chose to delay any move until summer.

Now Atletico’s transfer chiefs, under Mateu Alemany, face a decision on whether to chase the German again, who has earned around €17 million yearly in Munich.

Goretzka’s choice leaves Atletico without the reinforcements Simeone likely hoped to secure this month and keeps a key player in Bayern’s ranks through the second half of the campaign.
