Mohamed Salah once again delivered a crucial moment for Egypt on January 5, 2026, scoring deep into injury time of extra time to secure a dramatic win over Benin in the round of 16 at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

The Liverpool forward’s late strike propelled the Pharaohs into the quarterfinals and marked a significant personal milestone. The goal was Salah’s 66th for the national team, moving him past Ivory Coast legend Didier Drogba.

Now just three goals shy of the all-time Egyptian scoring record held by Hosam Hassan, who is also the current national team coach, Salah has a chance to close the gap even further as Egypt remains in the tournament. Salah has already netted three goals at this edition of AFCON.

The continental records stand at 71 goals by Kinnah Phiri and 79 by Godfred Chitalu, putting Salah within reach of some impressive company if he keeps scoring.
