Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has backed German midfielder Florian Wirtz’s performances in the Premier League.

"Wirtz is gradually improving. There’s no doubt the boy has quality. The Premier League lost Kevin De Bruyne but gained Wirtz. We’re talking about special players coming into our league. I’ve watched him a lot and wondered if he could reach De Bruyne’s level," Carragher said.

Carragher went on to compare Wirtz to another creative midfielder. "When I watch Wirtz, I think he could be like David Silva, but there’s something in him from both of them."

He tempered expectations while reflecting on Wirtz’s slow start. "I’m not sure he will deliver the same results as De Bruyne. But regarding Wirtz’s slow start... There was an away game against Manchester City and Gary Neville said he looked like a child. Now he’s about to play City again, this time at Anfield. He’s no longer a child. And that’s a great opportunity to shut Neville up," Carragher added.
