Negotiations over Lucas Paquetá’s move back to Flamengo have taken a more concrete shape but finalizing a deal remains complicated. Several hurdles still block a clear resolution despite a more positive outlook.

The possibility of West Ham letting go of the midfielder surfaced last Wednesday when Paquetá informed coach Nuno Espírito Santo of his wish to return to Brazilian football.

West Ham has shown willingness to negotiate but put forward a proposal that clashes with Flamengo’s plans. The English side suggested Flamengo purchase Paquetá but agree to loan him back to West Ham until the Premier League season concludes. This arrangement is driven by West Ham’s fight against relegation, where Paquetá is considered vital. Initially reported by The Guardian and later confirmed by Brazilian outlet GE, this condition is complicated for Flamengo.

The main sticking point is the Premier League’s calendar, which doesn’t finish until May 24. Flamengo’s board believes this makes immediate squad planning difficult and looks to find more flexibility in upcoming talks scheduled for Friday.

Financially, there’s good news for Flamengo: negotiations on the transfer fee have advanced, now proposed at 40 million euros—a significant drop from the original 60 million euros asking price.

Inside Flamengo, this revised price signals progress. Paquetá’s insistence has been influential, with the Flamengo board confident the player’s own pressure could speed up the process. So far, Flamengo hasn’t made an official offer, preferring to wait for Paquetá’s efforts to bridge talks with West Ham, expected soon.

While Flamengo isn’t planning to increase its financial bid, it remains open to discuss terms and conditions. The Brazilian transfer window’s March 3 deadline allows for ongoing negotiations.

The club’s priority is securing Paquetá quickly as it chases three trophies:

  • Campeonato Carioca
  • Supercopa do Brasil
  • Recopa Sudamericana

Although the transfer saga drags on, Paquetá’s return to Gávea looks more likely now than ever before.
