Dani Carvajal is battling the lingering impact of a knee injury sustained last season, which has dulled the reliability and sharpness that once set him apart.

Since regaining fitness, the right-back has found it tough to earn the trust of manager Arbeloa and has found himself largely confined to brief substitute roles in both La Liga and European fixtures during 2026.

In a recent match against Valencia, Arbeloa opted to start with youngster David Jimenez at right-back, only bringing on Trent Alexander-Arnold later in the game. Carvajal wasn’t called upon at all, signaling his peripheral status in the current squad.

With no talks of renewing his contract and his deal expiring on June 30, this season could mark the end of Carvajal’s long tenure at Real Madrid. Unless circumstances shift dramatically, a summer exit seems increasingly likely.
