Cristiano Ronaldo has been temporarily suspended from the Portuguese national team following a dispute with coach Jorge Jesus during the latest international break.

The 41-year-old Al Nassr star left the national squad camp prematurely after a serious disagreement with Jesus, sparking widespread reaction across Portuguese football.

Now, the Portuguese Football Federation has officially announced disciplinary proceedings against Ronaldo to determine whether his actions breached established rules.

"On October 9, 2026, a disciplinary proceeding was initiated against Cristiano Ronaldo by decision of the Non-professional Section to establish whether the facts reported on October 7 carry disciplinary significance," the federation said in an official statement.

They added that Ronaldo had already been subject to an automatic preventive suspension, but it was decided that this suspension would be extended during the ongoing disciplinary process.

"Regardless of the automatic preventive suspension that was in force until the initiation of the proceedings, an additional preventive suspension of the player was ordered, and the procedure was given an urgent character," the federation clarified.

The tension between Ronaldo and Jorge Jesus erupted after the forward was left on the bench in the match against Norway. Ronaldo subsequently claimed publicly that the coach did not keep his promise to give him playing time.

Ronaldo has admitted his decision to leave the camp early was a mistake and apologized to his teammates and fans. He even called on the federation to review his behavior without special treatment because of his status as captain.

At this point, it is unclear how long the suspension of the five-time Ballon d'Or winner will last. The final decision will come once the disciplinary process concludes.
