Harry Kane Beats Kylian Mbappé to 2026 Ballon d’Or by Fine Margin
Harry Kane wins the 2026 Ballon d’Or ahead of Kylian Mbappé, with Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal third after a closely contested vote.

Harry Kane won the 2026 Ballon d’Or, finishing ahead of Kylian Mbappé and Lamine Yamal in a fiercely contested race for football’s most prestigious individual award.
The winner was announced at a ceremony at the London Palladium, where the final order of the season’s top 30 players was also revealed.
Mbappé finished second, the highest placing of his career in the award. Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal came third, one position lower than last year. Two former winners, Rodri and Lionel Messi, completed the top five.
France Football editor-in-chief Vincent Garcia said the contest between Kane and Mbappé was extremely close. The gap between them was smaller than the 41-point margin by which Spanish midfielder Rodri beat Vinícius Júnior in 2024.
Garcia also explained why Yamal finished third despite winning the World Cup with Spain. Votes for the Spanish internationals were split mainly between Yamal and Rodri, reducing the teenager’s chances of taking first place. Spain’s strong team performance also made it harder for the jury to single out one player.
Yamal’s World Cup displays were another factor. Although he became a world champion, he scored just once and began the tournament with an injury.
Kane therefore claimed the award after one of the closest contests of recent years, finishing ahead of two of world football’s biggest stars.
