Real Madrid’s recent momentum has come to an abrupt halt. After stringing together three wins, including a solid performance against Villarreal and a dominant display versus Monaco, Benfica’s victory has exposed old vulnerabilities once more.

This loss can’t just be brushed off as a fluke. It painfully echoes the disaster that unfolded in Albacete just a fortnight ago. The stakes now seem even higher, with the team knocked out of the Copa del Rey and slipping out of the top 8 — a heavy price for narrowing the gap on Barcelona to a single point.

The match laid bare the recurring issues that have plagued Madrid throughout the season. There was a noticeable lack of intensity among the players, and conceding four goals is already alarming. Thanks to Courtois, though, the embarrassment was kept from spiraling into something worse.

For coach Arbeloa, the concerns go deeper than just this result. What’s troubling is the sharp regression after the progress recently made. He faces the daunting challenge of rebuilding confidence and consistency from scratch.

Recent wins had quieted critics and brought hope that the new coaching regime could steady the ship. Yet, this defeat serves as a harsh reminder of the uphill battle to establish a clear style of play and avoid the jarring inconsistencies seen match to match.

Arbeloa’s job will be further complicated by having to navigate the preliminary knockout round. This fixture demands two vital weeks in February that could have been used for tactical preparation and recovery. The first leg against Benfica or Bodo/Glimt is scheduled for the 17th or 18th, with the return leg on the 24th or 25th. What was meant to be a calming midweek schedule now turns chaotic again, piling extra pressure on a squad already stretched thin by the Club World Cup commitments.
