Wayne Rooney believes Tottenham Hotspur is seriously caught up in a fight to avoid relegation after a run of seven games without a win. The London club now sits just six points above the drop zone.

Rooney was particularly critical of captain Cristian Romero after his first-half red card for a reckless challenge on Casemiro. He also took aim at a recent social media post by the defender, which seemed to attack the club’s management over the shortage of fit players.

The ex-striker also sympathized with manager Thomas Frank, who replaced Ange Postecoglou last summer.

Tottenham finished 17th last season despite winning the Europa League, a result that led to Postecoglou’s departure. Currently sitting 15th, Spurs face a tough slog ahead as they try to stabilize their Premier League status.
