Alan Shearer warns Chelsea must sign top striker and defender to challenge for the Premier League title. Current squad not enough!
Newcastle legend Alan Shearer believes Chelsea have little chance of challenging for the Premier League title unless they sign elite players for key positions.
"I think they lack a top number 9 striker, as well as a top central defender," Shearer said on the podcast The Rest Is Football. "Maybe a goalkeeper too… I've never been fully convinced Chelsea can win the league."
He didn’t dismiss the current attacking options but underlined the need for world-class recruits. "I'm not saying Joao Pedro and Liam Delap can't do the job, but if you want to reach that elite level and genuinely fight for the Premier League title, then you need a top central striker and central defender."
Chelsea's recent 1-0 defeat to Aston Villa leaves them 12 points behind the summit, effectively ruling them out of this season’s title race.
The club’s main focus now shifts to returning to the top four, especially since Liverpool have overtaken them and hold a three-point lead.
