Manchester United’s manager Ruben Amorim has acknowledged that the club's lack of creativity over the Christmas period largely came down to the absence of three crucial attacking players – Bruno Fernandes, Amad Diallo, and Brian Mbeumo.

Both Amad and Mbeumo were unavailable due to commitments with their national teams for the Africa Cup of Nations, while Fernandes was forced off at halftime against Aston Villa and missed the following two games.

I don’t like to talk about it because it sounds like an excuse. It was just bad luck to lose Amad, Brian, and Bruno at the same time. They create more chances than the other players. If you lose all three at once, any team in the world will have problems.

The Portuguese coach said the stats clearly underline who carries the burden in attack.

The data is clear – these three players create the majority of our chances. When not only one but all three are missing, it’s normal that we suffer.

He also pointed out the impact on set pieces.

Who was taking the corners and free kicks? Amad, Brian, and Bruno. It all adds up and we have to acknowledge that.

For Amorim, understanding why the team struggled creatively and in quality during the last three matches is crucial.

It’s important to realise why we were having difficulties with creativity and the quality of play. I think the answer is perfectly clear.
