Arsenal sit comfortably at the top of the Premier League, holding a six-point advantage over second-placed Manchester City as they prepare to face Nottingham Forest this weekend.

Despite finishing second in the league for the last three campaigns and having not won a major trophy since 2020, the Gunners are now competing on four different fronts. They top their Champions League group with a flawless record, secured a 3-2 victory over Chelsea in the first leg of the League Cup semi-final, and remain contenders in the FA Cup.

Ahead of this weekend’s match, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta was questioned about whether there’s a growing feeling within the club that this could be a historic season.

We are building very good momentum and belief comes from performances, the level of consistency that we have shown throughout 32 games already this season.

He highlighted their impressive form, noting the team has only lost twice all year. Arteta added:

And what we did the other day at Stamford Bridge, it should help us to be very convinced that we have the ability to do that.

Still, the Spaniard was quick to stress that maintaining that high standard every game is the real challenge and the season is far from over.

But the reality is that you have to show it in every game and there's still so much to happen, but we are glad that we are still alive in the four competitions.

On the topic of squad depth, Arteta believes competition for places has brought out the best in his players since the start of the campaign.

It's something that we talked about from the start of the season,

If we want to have any chance of doing that (winning the Premier League), we have to be there.

Reflecting on how past title contenders like City and Liverpool have relied on strong squads to secure success, he views this as the new reality for title chasers.

So this is the nature,

Mikel Arteta

We want this. We really have to accept this because there's no other way. They haven't done it with 14, 15 or 16 players - none of the clubs in the history of the last 10, 15 years. So it's something that we want to be there. We have to do it and it has to be natural.

Now chasing their first league title since 2004, Arsenal’s progress this season is closely watched as they strive to convert momentum and squad depth into silverware.
