Kobbie Mainoo started his first Premier League game of the season during Michael Carrick’s interim management stint, helping Manchester United secure a 2-0 win against rivals Manchester City.

The 20-year-old burst onto the scene in the 2023/24 campaign under Erik ten Hag, scoring in the FA Cup final victory over City and playing a key role in England’s journey to the Euro 2024 final. Yet, when André Amorim took over for 14 months, Mainoo found game time hard to come by despite expectations he'd pair alongside captain Bruno Fernandes.

Carrick highlighted the importance of youth in United’s setup ahead of their trip to face Premier League leaders Arsenal:

This club needs young players coming through and being the foundation for what it means, not just for the players or the squad, but for the club and for the supporters.

He sees Mainoo as a shining example of talent rising fast through the ranks.

Kobbie is a prime example. To come through so quickly and have the rapid rise, to play in some unbelievably big games and impact those big games at such a young age shows an awful lot of quality and in terms of the character and to be able to handle it.

Carrick acknowledged that careers have their ups and downs but believes last week’s display proved what Mainoo can contribute.

The victory over City moved United up to fifth place, just one point shy of the Premier League’s top four. Optimism at Old Trafford lifted alongside the strong performance and Carrick hopes it will be the base for a strong run to finish the season and secure Champions League qualification for the first time in three years.

It was a big result, big performance and a big uplift with the feeling inside the stadium.

Michael Carric

It's getting that balance between taking the encouragement and the confidence from the game and keeping level-headed and our feet on the ground. One game doesn't make you a great team, but it gives us a great foundation to build so there's a lot of confidence.
