Liverpool have struggled to find form in the Premier League this year, managing just one win from seven matches in 2026. Their poor run has dropped them to sixth place, four points shy of the top five.

Dominik Szoboszlai's spectacular free-kick put Slot’s team on track for a vital victory at Anfield. However, Liverpool fought back with two goals, and chaos ensued in the closing moments, including Szoboszlai receiving a needless red card.

You cannot compare this game with three or four months ago. We have improved so much, but we need to improve the results.

So many times this year we haven't got what I think we deserve and this is another time.

Bernardo Silva’s late strike in the 84th minute set up a frantic finish. Then, Erling Haaland converted a penalty in stoppage time, handing Liverpool yet another last-gasp defeat — the fourth of the campaign. The drama didn’t end there though, as City had a late goal ruled out.

In a desperate attempt to equalize, Rayan Cherki lobbed the ball in from halfway while Liverpool’s goalkeeper Alisson Becker was far out of position. Szoboszlai fouled Haaland as he tried to clear the ball, and Haaland retaliated in kind. Both actions led to the goal being disallowed and Szoboszlai’s red card, which means he will miss Wednesday's game against Sunderland.

Come on, referee, give (the) goal and go home.

Slot, meanwhile, was livid over an earlier refereeing decision when Marc Guehi was only booked for a foul on Mohamed Salah just outside the penalty area. Slot insisted that Guehi denied a clear goal-scoring chance.

If there is any incident we should talk about, it's when Mo Salah is one-on-one with the goalkeeper.

Anyone who has been to this stadium in the last seven or eight years knows that it is a goal for Salah. Once again, the referee decides not in our favour.

For Manchester City, this win marked their first away victory at Anfield in front of a crowd since 2003. The result brings them to within six points of Premier League leaders Arsenal.
