Manchester United have identified Mateus Fernandes as a prime candidate for midfield reinforcement ahead of the upcoming season.

At 21 years old, Fernandes has caught the eye thanks to his experience in the Premier League and his promising potential. Discussions with his representatives are already underway.

Though Fernandes is a strong contender, United are also considering other Premier League players such as Bournemouth's Alex Scott. Other names like Elliot Anderson and Sandro Tonali remain in the conversation but seem unlikely, while Sander Berge has also been suggested as a possible alternative.

Inside Old Trafford’s recruitment team, Fernandes has gained considerable support, and it’s believed the player himself is keen on the move.

Explorations into a possible transfer are happening, but United are wary of overpaying. West Ham, who acquired Fernandes less than a year ago, are expected to demand a hefty fee, but there’s reluctance at United about inflating the price beyond what’s reasonable.

In August 2025, West Ham brought Fernandes in from Southampton for roughly £40 million. Despite the Hammers’ relegation from the Premier League, the midfielder has maintained interest from notable European clubs.

European giants Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain are keeping tabs on Fernandes. On the domestic front, Arsenal and an unnamed Premier League club have also made preliminary inquiries.

PSG’s pursuit aligns with their continued scouting of midfield options, which also includes Ayyoub Bouaddi.

This mounting interest has encouraged West Ham’s belief they could command double their initial outlay. Sources within the club express confidence that, should bidding wars intensify, an £80 million transfer fee is attainable.

This approach reflects West Ham’s mindset as they prepare for life back in the Championship following last season’s relegation.

However, this firm stance might complicate matters for Manchester United, who aim to secure important signings early, ideally before pre-season kicks off, to get ahead of their summer business.
