On Monday, January 12, 2026, Real Madrid officially announced the dismissal of first team head coach Xabi Alonso.

According to El Gol Digital, Alonso’s contract was initially set for three years, with an annual salary of €7 million. After terminating the contract, Real Madrid is obligated to pay the full amount agreed upon. This means Alonso’s six-month tenure at the helm cost the club €21 million.

The decision comes amid a fiercely competitive 2025/26 La Liga season. Currently, Real Madrid sits second in the standings with 45 points from 19 matches, remaining close to the league leaders.

Now, the club faces the challenge of appointing a new head coach to steer the team through the rest of the season and maintain their title ambitions.
