Michael Carrick’s comeback to Manchester United’s bench, even as a caretaker, has injected fresh energy into the club. In just two games, the ex-midfield star has changed the mood at Old Trafford, guiding the team to a commanding 2-0 win over Manchester City in the derby and a narrow 3-2 victory against Arsenal at the Emirates.

These impressive results have shed new light on Cristiano Ronaldo’s praise from December 2021, when Carrick first took the reins temporarily.

Nothing is impossible for Carrick. He can become a great manager.

Cristiano Ronaldo

He was an exceptional player and I’m proud to have played alongside him and to have him as my coach.

Back then, Ronaldo’s remarks felt like a heartfelt farewell as Carrick stepped down, but fate had other plans. That initial caretaker period also ended with a 3-2 Arsenal win, underscoring a sense of destiny in Carrick’s leadership.

The numbers back up his impact: since Mikel Arteta’s arrival, Arsenal have only lost twice when scoring two or more goals in a competitive fixture — both losses coming against Carrick’s side.

Carrick isn’t new to coaching; he’s gained experience under Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, plus valuable time at Middlesbrough. Still, some remain skeptical about his suitability as full-time manager.

Roy Keane didn’t hold back on Sky Sports:

I’m not convinced he’s the right man for the job. They need a manager with a bigger name.

This drew a sharp rebuttal from Rio Ferdinand, one of Carrick’s strongest defenders:

To say he doesn’t deserve the opportunity is a huge lack of respect. That’s crazy.

Support has also come from abroad. Bastian Schweinsteiger took to social media to back Carrick and United:

Keep it up, Michael Carrick. Keep it up, Manchester United.

With his current deal running until June, speculation around Carrick’s future continues, but his immediate impact is clear. Four years after Ronaldo’s words, what once seemed like hopeful encouragement now looks more like a sharp insight into a manager making his mark.
