In the dying hours of the transfer window, Arsenal are making a surprising push to sign Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United, reports suggest.

According to Sky Germany, the Gunners have reached out directly to discuss a potential deal. However, completing the transfer before Monday’s 7pm deadline looks challenging.

Newcastle appear reluctant to let Tonali go so close to the deadline, making any agreement “very difficult” to secure.

Arsenal’s midfield has been hit hard after Mikel Merino suffered a foot injury in last month’s loss to Manchester United. Manager Mikel Arteta is searching for reinforcements to plug that gap in both the short and long term.

Tonali has become a prominent candidate due to his ability to adapt and his experience at a high level in Serie A and the Premier League.

Pulling off this transfer would be a bold deadline day move, signaling Arsenal’s ambition as they chase more trophies.
