Germany have already secured top spot in Group E ahead of their final match against Ecuador on Thursday, but they won't know who they face next until less than two days before the knockout stage begins.

Along with seven other group winners, Germany must wait until the conclusion of all group games late Saturday to find out which of the eight best third-placed teams they might meet in Monday’s round of 32 in Foxborough.

I think we are being punished as the group leader,

Nagelsmann

But if you look at all the algorithms and how everything plays together, it's extremely complex -- and the more teams you have, the more complex it gets.

Germany opened their campaign with an emphatic 7-1 win over Curacao before recovering from a deficit to beat Ivory Coast 2-1. This ensures they move past the group stage at a World Cup for the first time since their 2014 triumph.

However, the expanded 48-team format has created uncertainty, allowing for a wide range of potential opponents in the knockout rounds.

It's not ideal that we don't find out until (late Saturday) who we will play, but we are prepared, we worked out the opponents that are most likely,

Nagelsmann

We are prepared well enough that we don't have to prepare for the match in such a hectic way on Sunday, because it will be our last training session where we can actually change something. There's a little time pressure there... (but) we are all still pretty young as coaches, and if we have to, then we'll work through the night.

Ecuador, meanwhile, are fighting to keep their tournament hopes alive after a strong qualifying run raised expectations. They currently sit with just one point, drawing 0-0 with Curacao and losing 1-0 to Ivory Coast.

We deserved far more. The way we competed makes us think we're on the right path. It's just our finishing that was lacking,

This is the biggest challenge we are facing, the biggest opportunity. I'm not afraid to fail. If you give your all there is nothing to reproach yourself for. I am convinced we still have a chance.
