Germany’s win over Côte d’Ivoire wasn’t just another step toward the knockout stages—it marked a historic moment for goalkeeper Manuel Neuer. At 40 years old, the legendary shot-stopper has become the player with the most World Cup matches played, reaching an impressive 21 games.

Starting in the game against the African side, the 2014 world champion broke the previous record held by French legend Hugo Lloris, who played in 20 matches. Neuer also surpassed other football greats like Brazil’s Claudio Taffarel and fellow German Sepp Maier, both of whom have 18 World Cup appearances.

But Neuer didn’t just top the charts by number of games; he also set another remarkable record, becoming the oldest player ever to wear the German jersey at a World Cup final.

His journey to this milestone was far from smooth. Neuer initially announced his retirement from the national team after Euro 2024 and was out of coach Julian Nagelsmann’s plans for a long time. The Bayern keeper, however, changed his mind for what he calls "the last dance" at the World Cup—a chance to put the perfect end to a glorious era.
