Howard grew up in the care of his mother and that explains the close relationship between them. While in the sixth grade, the future US goalkeeper was diagnosed with Tourette Syndrome.

Before his teenage years, he was spotted at a soccer clinic by Tim Mulqueen, a former assistant coach for the United States Under 17 national team. The talent of the prodigious Howard caught his eye and he took interest in the New Jersey native.

Before long, another top shot within the US soccer fraternity spotted him and recognized his talents. This time it was Peter Mellor who was a coach employed by the United States Soccer Federation. Mellor was so impressed by his abilities that he placed him in the Olympic Development Program.

Professional Career

After a few years in the US development program for budding soccer stars, Howard’s career took off and he never looked back.

Howard’s first involvement with organized soccer was with the North Jersey Imperials, before teaming up with the Metro Stars.

Not long after he joined the Metro Stars, the future US international earned a move to the prestigious Manchester United in the English Premier League in 2003.

His transfer to the English giants was a result of the need for the team to replace the enigmatic French man, Fabian Barthez. As if the prospect of replacing a World Cup winner wasn’t daunting enough, he also had to compete with Roy Carrol for the number one spot.

The American went on to record some level of success with the club by winning the 2003 Community Shield, the 2004 FA Cup, and the League Cup in 2006.

However, his position as the number one goaltender for Manchester United came under threat with the acquisition of Dutch goalkeeper, Edwin Van der Saar.

At the beginning of the 2006/2007 season, Howard joined Everton on loan, and due to his desire to play regularly, he made his loan permanent in February 2007.

The American went on to make over 300 appearances for the Toffees, cementing his place as one of the Premier League legends on Merseyside.

After a nine year spell in the North of England, he returned to his country, signing up with the Colorado Rapids where he played for a further three years before playing six games for Memphis 901 where he is a minority owner.

International Career

Tim Howard represented the United States at the U20 and U23 levels before earning his first senior call up in 2002.

But he had to wait till four years later before he got his chance for the US team to the World Cup, Germany 2006.

He holds the record for the most appearances by a goalkeeper for the US national team with 121 matches played in the colors of the United States.
