Atletico Madrid dumped Liverpool out of the Champions League

Liverpool exit the Champions League after a dramatic 3-2 loss to Atletico Madrid at Anfield. The aggregate scoreline was 4-2 and Atletico ended the reign of the Reds in the Champions League.

Things looked good for Liverpool when Georginio Wijnaldum opened the scoreline in the 43rd minute of the game and when Roberto Firmino added the second goal it looked like the Reds will progress to the quarter-finals, but it was Marcos Llorente who did not let that happen.

Marcos Llorente who came in as substitute punished Adrian's mistake and stun Anfield in the 97th minute when he scored the first goal for Atletico in the game. Soon after the first goal a great pass from Alvaro Morata and a perfect finisher from Llorente left Liverpool in a desperate need of two goals to progress to the next stage.

It was Alvaro Morata, who also came in as substitute, that added the third Atletico goal and dumped the holders of the Champions League out of the competition.

Definitely the result is not fair to Liverpool and is extraordinary result for Diego Simeone's team, as Atletico were outplayed for the whole game.

Liverpool had an important task coming into the game, they knew that they need to do everything possible to progress to the next stage of the competition, but they soon found out that this will be hard as they have to play against a team who only defend themselves.

Atletico Madrid showed everyone that they can't be underestimated when Diego Costa was close in opening the scoreline only 14 seconds from the start of the game.

But soon after that Liverpool took strong grip of the game and dominated in possession throughout the first half. Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane both had some great chances to open the scoreline, but they shots were not precise enough.

Liverpool got their best chances on the right flank where Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain was comfortable with the ball and played very well alongside Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Gini Wijnaldum has proven himself as a person who can make a memorable come back in the Champions League and made a powerful header which left Jan Oblak with no other choice, but to watch it how it goes right into the net.

After the break Liverpool had a lot of opportunities to double their advantage, but Oblak was impenetrable wall. He denied every shot Liverpool made, Firmino tried to place the ball right into the net, but Oblak saved it again.

Soon after that Joao Felix tested the Liverpool goalkeeper Adrian and made a shot from distance. Liverpool thought they had the lead when Andrew Robertson made a good header, but the ball came back off the bar.

Liverpool made attack after attack and as it seemed Atletico did not even had a chance to get to the Liverpool's half.

However, just at the end of the 90 minutes Atletico got their first real chance to beat Liverpool, when Saul made a good header right into the net, but the goal was disallowed because he was offside.

The game went into extra-time and Liverpool took the lead soon after that, when Firmino fired a ball to the net and hit the post, but then the ball fell perfectly for him and he placed it to the net.

But then Adrian made a costly mistake when he misplaced his pass and Llorente changed the mood of the game.

Soon after the first goal Llorente made Liverpool to suffer even more when he scored for the second time. Adrian probably would have saved it, but a slip prevented his from doing it.

Liverpool had to score two goals to go further in the competition. They regrouped very fast, but Alvaro Morata just put the end of their hopes, when he scored the third Atletico goal.

It is the first time Liverpool failing to progress from a two-legged tie in European competition under the management of Jurgen Klopp.

Now the Merseyside team have nothing else to play for as they are out of the FA Cup and Champions League and they are almost a certain winners of the Premier League.
