Harry Kane in action for Bayern Munich in the red home kit during a match

Bayern Munich guaranteed a top-eight finish in the 36-team Champions League standings with one game remaining, joining Arsenal and avoiding the risk of a two-legged knockout playoff. Kane’s opening goal came from a corner header before he earned and converted a penalty, putting Bayern in command at home.

The England captain had a chance to complete a hat-trick but missed a late penalty after Bayern defender Kim Min-jae was shown a second yellow card and sent off.

This defeat at Arsenal remains Bayern’s only loss across all competitions this season, during which they have also built an 11-point lead in the Bundesliga.

Kane’s second strike marked his 34th goal of the season, helping Bayern reach a remarkable 103 goals from 29 matches.

The hosts started slowly, possibly unsettled by the absence of their 9,300-strong ultra fan group due to a UEFA ban on the lower stand after pyrotechnics were set off. Union SG, the Belgian champions, had the best first-half chance; Promise David broke free inside half an hour but nodded straight at Neuer.

The deadlock was finally broken at the 52-minute mark when Michael Olise delivered a pinpoint cross into the six-yard box and Kane powered a header at the near post.

Just a minute later, Kane won a penalty after being fouled by Union’s goalkeeper Kjell Scherpen and calmly converted to double Bayern’s lead.

Kim, who started in place of the ill Dayot Upamecano, was dismissed in the 63rd minute for a second yellow card after pulling Raul Florucz’s arm during an attack. Despite being down to ten men, Bayern maintained control.

Kane's late penalty hit the bar, an uncharacteristic miss, while Olise chipped another chance over the crossbar with only Scherpen to beat.
