Last season, he took part in only 26 games, starting in 24, raising concerns internally. Yet, the club ultimately decided his experience was essential.

The Spanish giants face a defensive reshuffle given the departure of key veterans like Dani Carvajal and David Alaba, both influential figures even with their recent dips in form. With promising talents such as Raul Asencio, Dean Huijsen, and Alvaro Carreras in the mix, retaining Rudiger could provide the necessary backbone. Rudiger’s contract will now keep him at the Bernabéu until June 2027, making him part of Mourinho’s first squad upon his return. The Portuguese coach has a history of building his defenses around seasoned centre-backs — from Carvalho and Pepe at Real Madrid to Otamendi at Benfica — and clearly trusts Rudiger’s ability to contribute effectively.
