Real Madrid Extends Rudiger Contract as Mourinho’s Return Promises Defensive Shakeup
Real Madrid extends Rudiger's contract until 2027 amid squad overhaul and Mourinho’s managerial comeback. Key defender stays put.

Real Madrid is gearing up for the upcoming season, despite delays caused by presidential elections and ongoing discussions involving José Mourinho, who is plotting his vision for the team’s return. Among the confirmed plans is the renewal of Antonio Rudiger’s contract, a deal that has been quietly progressing over recent months.
The experienced German defender, who joined from Chelsea ahead of the 2022-23 campaign, will extend his stay for an additional year. This aligns with the club’s informal policy of limiting contracts for players over 30 to just one season. Although Rudiger’s recent form has been inconsistent and hampered by injuries, his leadership in a relatively youthful squad remains highly valued.
Real Madrid initially hesitated about offering Rudiger a fresh contract due to his diminished physical presence last season – a far cry from previous years when he consistently appeared in over 50 matches per campaign. Last season, he took part in only 26 games, starting in 24, raising concerns internally. Yet, the club ultimately decided his experience was essential.
The Spanish giants face a defensive reshuffle given the departure of key veterans like Dani Carvajal and David Alaba, both influential figures even with their recent dips in form. With promising talents such as Raul Asencio, Dean Huijsen, and Alvaro Carreras in the mix, retaining Rudiger could provide the necessary backbone. Additions like Dumfries and Konaté will also bolster the back line.
Rudiger’s contract will now keep him at the Bernabéu until June 2027, making him part of Mourinho’s first squad upon his return. The Portuguese coach has a history of building his defenses around seasoned centre-backs — from Carvalho and Pepe at Real Madrid to Otamendi at Benfica — and clearly trusts Rudiger’s ability to contribute effectively.
The German wanted to stay with the Whites and the club wanted to retain a veteran presence in such a young squad, particularly at the heart of the defence.

Although his form has dipped somewhat, he has become an important figure in the dressing room too, and the club believes he can continue to contribute.

The upcoming season promises to be a challenging balancing act as Real Madrid blends youth with experience, and Rudiger’s presence could be crucial in stabilizing their backline during this period of transition.
