Peter Whittingham was hospitalised and is fighting for his life

The former Cardiff midfielder Peter Whittingham has been hospitalised with head injuries from what appears to have been an accidental fall, the South Wales Police has confirmed the news.

The former England U21 international, who finished his career at Blackburn back in 2018, suffered the head injuries after he accidental fell at a pub in Barry.

Meanwhile, the South Wales Police have informed the BBC that the 35-year-old Cardiff star is currently hospitalised surrounded by his family who, at this time, want their privacy to be respected. His condition is was described as serious, with friends informing BirminghamLive that “everyone’s praying for him”.

South Wales Police released a statement on the social media saying: "At around 10pm on March 7, we were called to a licensed premises in Barry.

"A 35-year-old man from Penarth suffered a head injury as a result of a fall and remains at the University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff.

"At this stage there is no evidence or suggestion of a criminal act, and it appears the injury was caused by an accidental fall.

"Enquiries are continuing into the circumstances of the incident."

Whittingham, who is born in Nuneaton, started his football career at boyhood club Aston Villa, where he made his debut back in 2003 and made 66 appearances.

He signed with Cardiff in 2007 and played in the finals of the FA Cup and the League Cup for the Bluebirds. He played for the Bluebirds when the won a promotion to the Premier League in 2013.

Whittingham made 459 appearances and scored 98 goals for the Bluebirds, before he finished his career at Blackburn in 2018 at the age of 33.
