What is going to happen with the Premier League?

Premier League clubs and officials are due to meet on Thursday to discuss plans for the remaining season following the coronavirus crisis. The emergency board will meet via conference call.

Top-flight matches in England are currently postponed until April 4 at earliest - though the date is expected to be pushed back in time - and Premier League bosses will now hold an important meeting with the clubs to discuss what the next steps should be amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The meeting will take place on Thursday morning via conference call due to UK ban on non-essential social contact and many people now work from home.

However, earlier this week it got clear that Euro 2020 is now postponed to 2021 and obviously it has opened up a window for domestic leagues to be completed by June 30.

But it is unlikely to put a definitive date on when the matches will resume, given the UK government has banned sports events by advising the mass gatherings to be avoided.

If those restrictions on mass gatherings are not lifted soon the idea of staging fixtures behind closed doors will definitely be preferred by the officials.

However, all 20 clubs will be represented on the call, held by the Premier League and various scenarios will be discussed.

Last week an option the season to be "null and void" was presented by West Ham vice-chair Karren Brady and she will attend the meeting.

Football Association chairman Greg Clarke also is concern that it is widely possible the season to be concluded.

According to BBC Brighton and Hove Albion chief executive Paul Barber said that it would be "unjust" if the leaders in the league's table Liverpool were denied the title, and gave the idea to increase the league to 22 teams for 2020-21 season.

Club representatives will be shown various end-of-season scenarios at the meeting, and what the possible financial and legal ramifications of each might be.

It is known that the Premier League held talks with the FA and the EFL and the broadcast partners and sponsors fear the threat of legal action on a number of fronts.

According to Sky and BT the top clubs in the Championship ready to launch a legal bid if the season is halted and they are denied the opportunity to be promoted.

But at least for now, as it seems there is determination to do everything possible to push for the current campaign to be finished.
