Premier League clubs have voted for a return to contact training and their vote has been approved. That is another significant step for the resumption of the season of course when it is safe to do so.
The players have already resumed their training with the team, but in small groups, which is step one of the return to training protocols.
However, several players have decided not to return to the training with the team, including Watford captain Troy Deeney and N'golo Kante as they have concerns about their health.
Earlier this week, the government released the second phase for returning to training and the athletes are now allowed to return to closer training with the team, but in order if the medical conditions are in place.
The Premier League had a meeting with the club captains to discuss the new government guidelines.
It was understood that no significant issues have been raised and the meeting took completely other direction from the last time, when the players expressed their concerns.
The Premier League and the government have committed to further research into the risk to those from BAME backgrounds compared to other groups.
The Premier League released a statement after the clubs voted for returning to close training.
“Premier League shareholders today voted unanimously to resume contact training, marking another step towards restarting the Premier League season, when safe to do so.
“Squads are now able to train as a group and engage in tackling while minimising any unnecessary close contact.
“The Premier League’s priority is the health and wellbeing of all participants.
“Strict medical protocols are in place to ensure the training ground is the safest environment possible and players and staff will continue to be tested for COVID-19 twice a week.
“Stage Two of the Return to Training protocol has been agreed following consultation with clubs, players, managers, the PFA, LMA and the Government.
“Discussions are ongoing as work continues towards resuming the season, when conditions allow.”
